Comfort & Convenience Tour Description

8th grade, HS American History

This tour explores the advances in technology that exploded during the Gilded Age and how these can be seen at Reynolda.  The tour connects to stories of Reynolda and includes most of the house.

NC Standard Course of Study Connections: Social Studies: 8.H.2, 8.H.2.1, 8.H.2.2, 8.H.2.3, AH.B.21

Learning objectives: Students who experience a Comfort & Convenience tour will be able to

  • Find and discuss Gilded Age technologies in the Reynolds’s home and learn about these technological advances in the context of an early 20th-century North Carolina family
  • Examine stories from oral histories that help contextualize technological influences on daily life
  • Compare early 20th-century technologies with modern life
  • Explain how innovation and technology contributed to change in North Carolina and the nation
