Character and Identity in Art Tour Description
K-12th grades
Students examine various portraits in the American art collection. They will read the image for clues about the sitter’s identity and life. For K-2nd grade tours, this also includes reading a biographical picture book relevant to a work of art.

Learning objectives: Students who experience an Character and Identity in Art tour will be able to
- recall basic details about the history and people of Reynolda
- define and apply terminology related to portraiture (e.g. “portrait,” “sitter” and “attribute”)
- explain how objects, clothing, scale and other factors in a portrait convey meaning
- discuss and analyze art depicting people through conversation, written expression, and/or games
- practice visual literacy skills of observation and interpretation
