American Art in Focus: An Interactive Survey

Upcoming Date and Time(s):
Apr 23, 2026, 1:00pm — 3:00pm

Location: Reynolda Auditorium

Cost: $180 Adults / $144 Members

Are you curious about American history and culture? Do you want to learn more about what art can tell us about the past and ourselves?

Join Allison Slaby, curator, and Julia Tanner, director of teaching and learning, for a fun and informative survey of American Art history from the eighteenth century to today. The course will cover key periods in American Art, from colonial portraiture to Hudson River School Landscapes to the invention of Abstract Expressionism and more along the way.

While learning art historical content and key periods, participants in the class will also practice methods for looking at art, developing skills that they can use to explore new works of art at Reynolda and in other places. The survey will highlight how Reynolda’s collection helps tell the story of American Art while incorporating other interesting and well-known works from other institutions.

Class is held weekly on Thursdays in the Reynolda auditorium. Registration includes all five sessions.
