Reynolda Announces Summer at Reynolda, Featuring Live Music, Outdoor Films, New Exhibits
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (May 14, 2019) – The summer season at Reynolda was announced today and will include two longstanding outdoor events, a new exhibition from the estate archives and lectures offered free with museum admission. Using the social media hashtag #reynoldasummer, events and promotions will be shared throughout the season online. On Friday, May 31 at 2 p.m., Reynolda will host the Historic Reynolda Grounds and Gardens Tour. Curators from the museum and gardens will lead guests on a 90-minute walking tour that begins at the Reynolda Greenhouse and will cover the wetlands, trails and lawns of Reynolda. Registration for this free event presented in conjunction with Historic Preservation Month is at capacity.
June
June’s Object of the Month talk, one in the museum’s monthly series of talks offered free with admission, will be Wednesday, June 5 at 1 p.m. and will focus on the iconic green roof of Reynolda House. Museum Deputy Director Phil Archer will give the talk. Reynolda House recently announced that the museum was a recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to replace the roof beginning in 2020.
The annual Summertime Social will be Thursday, June 13, 6-9 p.m. Held on the north lawn of Reynolda called Sunset Hill, the popular event will be headlined by the band Souljam. Lawn games will be available, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets for seating; pets are not allowed. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Tickets are $15, and children 5 and under are free. Early-bird ticket pricing is available before June 2 at bit.ly/rh-summertime. July
July’s Object of the Month talk will be Wednesday, July 3 at 1 p.m. and will focus on “Dem Was Good Ole Days,” a print in the museum’s collection by Thomas Hovenden. Curator Allison Slaby will give the talk, which is free with museum admission.
A new exhibition featuring the life of Reynolda’s visionary Katharine Smith Reynolds will highlight her life after R.J. Reynolds. “Katharine Smith Reynolds Johnston” will open July 23 in the Master Bedroom Gallery of the house. The exhibition curated from the estate archives will tell the story of Katharine marrying Edward Johnston, the life they created together and Katharine’s accomplishments in the years following R.J.’s 1918 death. Visitors will be able to explore letters, photographs and attire never before on public display. The exhibition will be on view through 2021.

August
August’s Object of the Month talk will be Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. and feature “Horace Pippin” a photograph of the artist in Reynolda’s collection by photographer Arnold Newman. Reynolda’s Visual Storyteller Aaron Canipe will give the talk, which is free with museum admission.
Reynolda’s Friday night outdoor film series Cinema Under the Stars continues this year with one major change: admission will be free for the first time in the program’s 13 year history. For three consecutive Fridays, films will be shown at dark on the main lawn of Reynolda House. Gates open at 7 p.m., and a cash bar will be available. Cinema Under the Stars at Reynolda is presented by The Ginther Group of Keller Williams Realty Elite and Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation.
