“Garden as Art” — A Fundraiser for Reynolda Gardens

On Wednesday, November 2, 2022, a sold-out crowd gathered for a luncheon at Old Town Club to support Reynolda Gardens. The event—co-chaired by Stewart Butler, Pollyann Holthusen, and Scottie Neill—honored Nancy Neill Spencer.

Thaïsa Way, director of garden and landscape studies at Dumbarton Oaks, and
landscape photographer Sahar Coston-Hardy introduced their
new book, Garden as Art: Beatrix Farrand at Dumbarton Oaks. The book
explores Farrand’s original vision for Dumbarton as a living, breathing
work of art.

Reynolda Gardens strives to find the art in nature. This work is challenged,
however, by a changing environment. Today’s Formal Gardens
must withstand erratic weather and increased visitation while remaining
as beautiful and inspirational as their surroundings. Critically, the
Formal Gardens need greater electricity, improved drainage, and
increased accessibility for the public in order to move into the future
and better serve our shared community. This important work can only
be accomplished with your support.

Funds raised at this event support the continued reawakening of
Thomas Sears’s design for the Formal Gardens—a landscape that is both
an artform and a beloved oasis that fosters a sense of joy for all who visit.
